This scope was graciously donated by Dennis Anzel, THANK YOU!
It is a special scope from various viewpoints. DuMont was the main oscilloscope manufacturer before Tektronix. The 248 is a massive scope and probably the peak of DuMont's engineering. It is the earliest scope in the collection with a separate power supply. A multi conductor cable (with Amphenol connectors) connects the power supply to the scope unit. May be Tektronix got their inspiration for some of their units from this 248 model. It is eerily similar.
The colored knobs are different to earlier versions of the 248, those had chicken head knobs. The two yellow knobs may have been painted over, the read ones appear original.
The scope unit weighs only 60lbs, the power supply weighs 110lbs. The transformers in the power supply are just massive. The power supply contains a delay relay tube, another feature to be seen later in Tektronix scopes.
The schematic calls for a 5JPx CRT. The scope has a 5RP2 installed.
Cleaning of the scope was very difficult. The inside is not made for easy maintenance.
Overall, this is a masterpiece of scope for its era. Unfortunately not many mammoths like this survived.
Please contact me if you have further information.
