Comments:
This is the rack version of the 304-A, therefor the added "R" in the model name. Another designation was "H" for high voltage supply of low persistence cathode ray tubes.
The 304 model succeeded the 208 and 208-B models, which were not available in a rack format as far as I know. Not that there was anything wrong with the 208 but demands increased rapidly with upcoming TV technology. Also the military demanded more capable scopes. The 304 was introduced around 1950 and became a very successful product for DuMont. This just reinforced DuMont as the premier scope manufacturer and the 304 was probably the best compromise between price and technology. In 1950 the 304 cost $285, which would be equal to $3000 in 2018.
So, at DuMont, no one was scared of an upcoming company, making great scopes but much too expensive, named Tektronix.
