Manufacturer: Allen B. DuMont (USA)
Model: Type 425, S#259
Vintage: 1961
Purpose: Wideband Dual Beam Oscilloscope, General Purpose
Condition: Working
Comments:
The DuMont 425 is a very unique oscilloscope on various fronts. Manufactured in 1961, it is the first to incorporate joysticks for moving cursors. The "cursor" are two dots. Their distance is adjusted with the rotary dials at left and right top. The left dials are for amplitude [V] and the right dials are for time / frequency [s]. It is a simply, intuitive operation but the electronics for it are something different. Remember, this is a vacuum tube instrument, using 700W.
Even though it has a lot of Tek feel to it, it has no ceramic standoffs and the low power supply is much different.
Also note the connectors at the top for other equipment and diagnostics.
Overall it is a wonderful thought through engineering masterpiece.
At the time this scope was manufactured (1961), the company DuMont was already dismantled and DuMont Labs was integrated into Fairchild. The 425 is testament to the capabilities of the DuMont engineering group and a preview of what other scope manufacturers will offer decade(s) later.
Amazingly, it is still working fine.
Thank you, to Timothy Quill for taking such good care of this extraordinary instrument and graciously donating it.
