Manufacturer: Laboratory for Electronics Inc., Boston, MA (USA)
Model: Model 401, S#236, Case S#233
Vintage: 1952
Purpose: General Purpose Lab Oscilloscope
Condition: Partially Working
Comments:
This oscilloscope is designated as a Wideband General Purpose Oscilloscope, according to its brochure. But it must have been one of the finest scopes in the beginning of the 50s. It features a lot of capabilities, typically not expected at scopes of that age. The adjustable sweep delay is just one example. Please refer to the brochure for further details.
According to the brochure, it has a 5YP1 CRT. The scope displays a purple-blueish trace, which indicates a 5YP7 or 5YP11 though.
Inside the scope appears to be original and complete. Some capacitors may have leaked. Various functions did not work, even though it displayed a trace and it was possible to positon it. Further tests will have to wait until a manual can be obtained.
Side Note: Bernard Marshall Gordon ("Bernie") worked at LfE at the time when this scope was built. He is widely known as the inventor of the AD converter and other fundamental electronics.
