Comments:
These two scopes belong together. They were made at the same time, March 23, 1944. Their serial numbers are S#3424 and S#3492. They were part of the SCR-268 radar system. This was the first US radar system, with a first prototype presented on May 26, 1937. It was one of the most secret developments in US military. Due to rapid developments in radar, by November 1944 the SCR-268 was not classified as confidential anymore. These two units were made towards the end of the use of the SCR-268. Most likely they were made as spare units for systems still running. Based on their pristine condition, they were never used. Both are in identical condition.
There is plenty of information available about the SCR-268 radar system, i.e. on Wikipedia.
The SCR-268 radar system contains three oscilloscopes, for elevation, azimuth and range tracking. The third one was turned into a TV in the 50s. The CRT 5BP4 was an often used as CRT for TVs. Actually, it was used in the first commercial TV set, the TRK-5 by RCA. This is probably also the reason why so few units survived, a lot of their top quality parts could be used for other equipment. At least all 3 viewing hoods survived.
The BC 412-B is a massive scope, built to highest standards. The inside is treated against fungus. Each unit weighs 175 lbs. Controls are simple and straight forwards, which makes perfect sense because the operators were not able to look at the controls and the screen at the same time.
